ABOUT IRON NORSE

Iron Norse is a website for Volvo car enthusiasts. Here you’ll find Volvo news; road trip articles; a long, long-term review of our 2019 XC90; tips about getting the most from your Volvo; and hot takes on Volvo vehicles provided to us as loaners when our own are at our local dealership for service.

Why the name Iron Norse? At one level, it’s a play on the iconic literary name for steam locomotives, which began replacing horses as a mode of transportation in the 1800s. But what, you might ask, do Volvos have to do with iron? It turns out that the Volvo logo—a circle with an arrow pointing diagonally upward to the right—is not only an old symbol for the for the planet Mars and the Roman god of warfare, Mars, but also an old symbol for the iron industry. Norse is a little more obvious; it refers, of course, to anything related to Norway or other Scandinavian countries like Sweden, home to Volvo. We think Iron Norse wonderfully captures some of the best traits of Volvo vehicles—strength, solid construction, durability—as well as their Swedish heritage.

Iron Norse is published by Randy Myers, an independent business writer and editor who resides in southcentral Pennsylvania with his wife, Patti. He became a Volvo enthusiast in 2000 when she surprised him by announcing that she planned to buy a then two-year-old Volvo S90 from one of her work colleagues—and did.
